Welcome to America, please place your rights in the trashcan…

According to the Observer, the US government will now be requiring visitors to the United States to have all 10 fingerprints scanned to be compatible with FBI databases. There will be no restrictions on the use of the fingerprints internationally – so in theory they could be used across the world and by British agencies.

The quote from Michael Chertoff, Secretary of Homeland Security, given in the article is particularly frightening:

‘We will have a world in which any terrorist who has ever been in a safe house or has ever been in a training camp is going to ask himself or herself this question: have I ever left a fingerprint anywhere?’

Shami Chakrabarti of Liberty said “This must be the Keystone Cops school of border control”.

According to the Observer:

Britons already have their credit card details and email accounts inspected by the American authorities following a deal between the EU and the Department of Homeland Security. Now passengers face having all their credit card transactions traced when using one to book a flight. And travellers giving an email address to an airline will be open to having all messages they send and receive from that address scrutinised.

Hardly an incentive to visit America, and yet another sad example of how far the Bush administration has thrown out the founding principles of the United States.
